the things we witness together

My favorite game moment and my favorite film moment of 2014 have a lot in common.

In both, we witness the main characters witnessing something extraordinary: in Only Lovers Left Alive, a stunning musical performance in a bar in Tangier, and in Kentucky Route Zero, a stunning musical performance in a bar in a small American town.

It seems to me very significant that in both cases, the characters do not witness these things alone. They witness them with companions on their journey. Solitude and individual experience can be vital, but we also need witnesses to our lives. The moments we experience have greater life when they aren’t just ours and ours alone, but bind us together with those we love.
