I get frustrated with just how much scheming and deception there is on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Rebecca and Josh almost never share a sincere moment of connection because everything that happens between them is in some way a part of one of Rebecca’s plots. And of course I get that this is just that kind of comedy but I’m frustrated by how commonplace this is on TV in general, how narrative tension is so often manufactured out of characters’ unwillingness to just really talk to each other. And since, for me, when I feel a romantic connection with someone, I’m cracked open by them in a way that makes me feel a need to be open and real with them, it’s hard for me to understand how Rebecca could feel such a powerful connection to Josh when she has no problem deceiving him constantly and when we so rarely see her really connect with him at all.

Greg’s feelings for Rebecca are the only thing about the show that consistently feel real to me. His genuine affection for her, the way he loves just being around her, spending time with her, how he seems to really want to know her. But as he asserts here, he needs her to put him first, too, if anything is going to happen between them. Good for him. Being honest. A potential step toward a real connection.
