alone in a real city
In this 1983 Letterman appearance, New Yorker Fran Lebowitz says that she couldn’t live in San Francisco because “it doesn’t seem like real life to me there.” I wonder if today, in 2016, even New York still seems like real life.
I watched the film Begin Again the other night. At the start, Gretta (Keira Knightley) plays a song in a bar in New York.

Being alone in cities is quite literally the story of my life. It’s just about the only life I know how to live. So I had high hopes. But in Begin Again, Gretta records a series of songs around New York, and I felt the songs were unworthy of the city. They were too sleek and shiny to feel like real life. Still, I liked some of the images of Gretta alone in the city…

…and there are still songs of New York being written that sound like real life to me.
Now it’s just another place
A place your memory owns
