In Thief, Okla tells Frank: “Lie to no one.” Frank, a master thief, is asking Okla, a master thief, about love.
Michael Mann’s affective thrillers, where all the men are mourners, “true blues,” not fucking narcissistic melancholics (emotional thieves) who waste everybody’s time. Where ethics and moral codes matter more than anything because the world is so dead, so brutal, so unethical. And time. Time is everything for Mann’s characters.
In Miami Vice, the refrain is “time is luck,” and luck, of course, runs out.
