can’t hardly wait

The other day I posted Paul Westerberg’s song “Waiting for Somebody.”

Just now, at the coffee stand I walk to most mornings, “Can’t Hardly Wait” by Westerberg’s band The Replacements was playing.

See you’re high and lonesome
Try and try and try

Lights that flash in the evening
Through a hole in the drapes

And I just stood there and said “Oh man,” because increasingly it seems to me that, hard as it is, waiting is precisely the only thing some of us can do.
