While I did smile a bit, this really tore me up. What a world.
This is presented as a kind of joyous moment, but it also speaks to tremendous global financial injustice. These cacao farmers in the Ivory Coast work incredibly hard and although chocolate is a multi-billion-dollar industry, they make almost no money. They don’t even know what the cacao is used for. They have never experienced chocolate, and they certainly can’t afford it.
Toward the end, one of the men says, “What a privilege to taste it,” and my god, it really shouldn’t be.
